Let's send it !
Sun 19 June - Wed 22 June
Months of planning and preparation all becomes worthwhile on the day when you get up to go! It's not just the trip , where we're going, readying the camper, re-packing, checking first aid kits and pantry goods, it's preparing the business and all working within too. This has been really significant this time round with yet another amazing season heading into winter and record stock numbers on enjoying the diverse grasses and pasture.
It's 3 years since our WA Gibb River and coastal jaunt, that was 6 weeks too. And like all in the world there's been a bit of a breather as a pandemic has been navigated.
Breaky at Molong and a checkover, hot trailer brake which Stu finally had resolved by Nyngan. A good run overall through to Bourke and not quite as far as we thought and if there's anything we've learned the past 2 years is the ability to pivot and keep rolling.
Thankfully a non frosty event at Bourke, which we have experienced before and north we go. Picked up the Beer Sticks from Western Butchering at Charleville, and some fancy Coopers Pacific ale tinnies ;) , such a great town and north we continue. Pulling up at Tambo was reflectively a cracking great idea.

Another new stay at Winton, even though we have travelled through before. Great overnighter and walk about town. Since leaving home there has been amazing amounts of green forage and happy plants all the way. Having seen here before with novice eyes and observations, with dry and dirt everywhere, the contrasts and joy of experiencing and seeing this has been fabulous.
Great little spot on the Barcoo near Tambo
So lets introduce you to Ben. He is the publican at Royal Carrangarra Pub and cleverly decided to create the iconic Ben's Chicken Races. I really can't quite explain the vibe at Schnitzel Stadium that night, the buzz, the crowd, the atmosphere ..... Within 30 mins I reckon I'd completed 21 days of core exercises with laughter and the odd snort to boot. Deadset Gold and cracking fundraising efforts too.
Races have been going for almost a year, plenty of rules and regs that have evolved over time and plenty of good looking birds up for auction, raising funds for Littel Windmills, supporting sick kids in remote areas. We went for a cracking green chick - The Hulk, who had a bit of form and Barcoo Lady (the blue chick) was the fave. 4 laps chasing a remote control car, doesn't matter if they do all the laps or not, it's simply who is the first bird behind the car that goes over the finish line on the 4th lap. So they could actually just stand at the finish line, have a crack at counting 4 laps and then step over the line.

Ben going through the rules !
And they're off!!
The camp on the Barcoo had a courtesy bus, the only rule being you had to get the bus to be at the chicken races, then you got a ride home too. Lovely bloke from Perth driving the bus who found the job on Marketplace of course, in his second season now and he loves it ! Have loved coming through Tambo before and so super to have stayed there this time round and enjoy yet another diverse pub experience.
Bit of click it and podcasts/music.
Lunch at Longreach, as well as a quick visit to the embroidery shop. The Mrs (Eva) was inspired to have a crack at some crocheting and some Granny squares to while away the time in the back seat, and man she is punching them out ! Meanwhile Sash is doodling on the tablet with the S Pen - making some creations too.

The other key difference to before, is we have headed north relatively quick. With Hugo working at Gleeson just north of Cloncurry and a 2 day online conference to virtually attend we had a date to get to Cloncurry by. And we are all so excited to see our buddy having not seen him since early March.
