Plenty Highway .....here we come !

Sat 2 July - Day 14

Cracking early start on the road this morning...heading off at about 6.30am to get as far as we could across the Plenty Highway. We did our road checks and it all looked good until we got to the turnoff at the Stuart Hwy where it said the Donohue Hwy was closed !!!!!

So we pushed onto Gemtree 70km onto the Plenty Hwy - still 12 deg by now and cold icey wind and thankfully the gorgeous girls here assured us it was open and in great condition from reports of a fellow camper the day before . Big phew from my end having researched the roads etc !!

It was a great drive and the dirt road was in great nic and easy to drive according to Stu our Chaffeur..with the VIP from Bathurst planted behind him! We stopped at Jervois Station for a little diesel top up and a chat then headed on towards Tobermorey Station - which we were hoping to get to and not sure if we would pending the roads.

Largest ants nest in the area 50km east of Jervois Station...just massive!

After a big drive we made it to Tobermorey Station about 3pm....an extraordinary green camping ground oasis with one fellow camper there. Within 2hours there were joined by another 8-9 families who had joined the green patch !

Stu and Huges headed off to collect some firewood and almost got bogged...from all accounts Huges says that Stu was pretty worried and it took them 4 goes to get out...talk about giggle..we were in stitches having come at least 3500km from home to head off and get some wood to almost get stuck !

The landscape of here is stunning and makes you realise how remote we really are from towns and other people. Closest town to Tobermorey is Boulia with a pop. of say 120 people and still about another 200km south of Mount Isa as a major centre.

End to a great day with a lovely walk in the arvo and some beautiful scenery and loads of birds making a beautiful racket as the sun went down.
